Deception and False Messiahs
Not every claim of spiritual authority comes from God.
"And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many."
Matthew 24:4 KJV
Introduction
Jesus began His answer about the end times with a warning: “Take heed that no man deceive you” (Matthew 24:4, KJV). Before describing wars, famines and earthquakes, He directed attention to deception.
His warning calls believers to discernment, knowledge of Scripture and steadfast confidence in Christ rather than fear, speculation or unquestioning loyalty to human leaders.
Within a Pre-Tribulation framework, deception is expected to remain a feature of the present age and to intensify in the prophetic events associated with the end. Matthew 24:4–5 does not, by itself, give a complete timeline of those events. It establishes the need to recognise false claims and remain faithful to the true Christ.
The warning begins with deception
Biblical text: Matthew 24:4-5 warns that many will come in Christ’s name and deceive many.
The warning is broader than an obvious declaration that someone is Jesus. Deception may involve false claims of divine authority, distorted teaching about salvation, or promises of spiritual security that contradict the Word of God.
The central question is not whether a teacher appears persuasive, but whether the teaching is faithful to the truth revealed in Scripture.

False messiahs and the true Christ
Biblical text: Jesus specifically warns about people claiming His name and, in Matthew 24:5, saying “I am Christ.”
The Bible presents Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah, crucified and risen, whose return will be unmistakable in God’s appointed time.
A person claiming messianic status does not fulfil biblical prophecy merely by attracting followers or using Christian language.

Test every message against Scripture
Biblical text: "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." Galatians 1:8-9
Believers are not instructed to accept every supernatural claim, prediction or spiritual experience. Scripture commends discernment. The Bereans examined the Scriptures to evaluate what they heard (Acts 17:10-12), while John instructed believers to “try the spirits” (1 John 4:1).
Test a message by asking: Does it honour the biblical Jesus? Does it agree with the whole counsel of Scripture? Does it produce truthfulness, humility and obedience, or does it demand unquestioning allegiance to a personality?

Readiness begins with truth
Biblical text: Jesus gives a warning, not a list of named modern individuals. Identifying a contemporary person as a false messiah requires careful evidence and should not be done merely because that person is controversial. Matthew 24:4-5
In a Pre-Tribulation understanding, the Church is expected to be caught up to meet Christ before the future Tribulation period begins (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10). This expectation should encourage watchfulness and holy living, not date-setting or fear. The promise of Christ’s return is not permission to neglect Scripture today.
The practical response to deception is to know the genuine message of Christ, remain connected to sound biblical teaching and refuse to let sensational claims replace the authority of God’s Word.
